McCall had brought her to a day-care facility? What was he up to?
She turned to ask him, but he had strode up the front walk toward the door. Little faces pressed against the windows as little hands waved a greeting. D.J. continued to stand by the motorcycle, uncertain of what he expected her to do.
McCall turned with his hand on the doorknob. "Come on. I'm already late for class." He beckoned to her with his free hand. "You can help me. You'll love it."
D.J. placed the helmet on the seat and walked up the sidewalk, which she saw had been painted to look like the yellow brick road.
First it's angels, now it's kids. Why me?
The front door opened and a young woman stepped outside. D.J. stopped short and stared. She had never seen anyone so beautiful or so feminine. Her long blond hair had been braided around her head into an artful crown framing an exquisite face, highlighted by innocent blue eyes. The woman was petite, and the long, swirling floral print of her skirt nearly touched the white, high-topped boots encasing her small feet. She smiled up at McCall, her perfect ivory teeth flashing in the sun. The scent of hibiscus drifted to D.J. on the breeze, and she sneezed, once, violently. The woman's gaze shifted in D.J.'s direction, dismissed her, and returned to rest on McCall with admiration.
"Christian, we thought you'd forgotten all about us." The woman's voice, soft and breathy, hinted at cryptic promises she could share in the darkness of the night. To McCall's credit, he didn't take the bait.
